Frequently asked questions

Here you can find some of the questions people ask us all the time.

Q: What counts as a micronation?

A: Generally, a micronation is defined thusly:

a micronation is a group of humans, which

a) claims to be a state (macronation)

b) is not recognized as such by any other macronation

c) does not hold any lawful control (as determined by their macronation) over its claimed territory
(according to the Chyše Charter on the Differentiation of Micronations and Similar, But Hostile Entities and Micronational Conduct).
By following these guidelines, one should be able to determine what is and isn't a micronation.  However, exceptions are always possible and, in the end, the MTSA will decide what counts as a micronation, for the purposes of this organisation, whenever a new submission is made.

Q: What counts as visiting a micronation?
A:

-Visiting any official physical territory of a micronation, ceremonial territories included.

-Visiting an embassy, consulate or government office doesn’t count (unless they are part of the territory of a micronation).

-If you live within the territory of a micronation, that micronation also counts.

-Each territory of a micronation, which is not directly connected and part of to another territory of the same micronation, counts as a “separate micronation” in the points system.

-If a territory is split up into separate areas which are not connected to one another and one has visited both areas, only the area which yields the most points will be counted for the full territory.

Q: Do micronations I visited in the past count?

A: Yes. All micronations you have visited before joining the MTSA also count as visits for the MTSA.

Q: Do visits to micronations which no longer exist count, if I visited while they still existed?

A: Yes, visits like that also count.

Q: Do I have to be a micronationalist/ citizen of a micronation to join?
A: No, anyone can join.

Q: Can I join the MTSA with my micronation, if my micronation doesn't have any territory?
A: No, only micronations with territory people can actually visit may join.

Q: Do I have to pay to join?

A: Yes and no. You are required to make a one time donation of 10€or more (for the maintenance of the website and the souvenirs) when you join (5€ for micronations). But besides that, there are no more mandatory fees.
Since it may become necessary to upgrade this site at a later date to house potentially high numbers of images, money is needed to cover these costs, as well as the costs for our domain. Furthermore, we also need partial funding for souvenirs and stamps, offered by member micronations, since not all micronations have the financial means to acquire these souvenirs on their own. Thus, with your one time donation you not only support this very website but also the awesome souvenirs our member micronations and us wish to offer you.

Q: How can I get the MTSA Passport?

A: Once the MTSA passport has been released (expected in February) you will be able to acquire one by contacting the MTSA directly on the matter.

Q: Where can I use the MTSA Passport?

A: You can use the MTSA Passport whenever you travel to any micronation or attend a micronational summit, to collect official MTSA stamps or any other micronational stamps.

Q: Where does the money from donations go?

A: All donations are used to fund the MTSA exclusively. Some of the money is used to fund the MTSA website, while other funds are used to fairly co-fund the exclusive MTSA stamps and souvenirs. All funds and spending are catalogued and made accessible to all MTSA members at the end of each year.
A fund is planned to collect and distribute the money to those micronations who need it and also allow micronations and persons who wish to do so to donate additional amounts.

Q: As an MTSA member, can I only visit member micronations ?

A: No, you can still visit all micronations, even those who are neither MTSA members, nor on our list or map. However, in those cases, the final decision on how many points you will receive for this micronation or if it actually is a micronation (in rare cases) will be made by the MTSA after careful consideration.

Q: What should I never do when visiting micronations?

A:

-enter private property without permission from the owner,

-behave in a disrespectful or hateful manner towards anyone else you encounter on your travels,

-Remove, vandalize, damage or disrupt anything.

Q: Who makes the decisions within the MTSA?

A: At this time, the Chairman makes all major decisions. However, as members start to sign up, we hope to share responsibilities and decision making with other members.
All decisions regarding the finances of the MTSA are made with the micronational members of the MTSA.
